If the Christian story begins with a premise and a problem, it ends with a promise that we are still living into: a story about how all of creation could be a beautiful and loving place. It is a story about how we can leave the inhumanity of a broken existence and really actually be human.

Everything in This Series

Human Part 1

God’s reign of love is not waiting for us after we die, or following a rapture, or at the end of the world. God’s reign of love is right here and right now. God’s reign of love is in us and around us and among us. The only thing keeping us away from new and abundant life—the only thing keeping us under the powers of sin and death—is us.

Human Part 2

Our faith is in a God who feeds ravens (even though they do not work) and clothes lilies (even though they do not spin) and invites us into a reign of love (even though we did not earn it). Our faith is in a God who declares that there is enough and more than enough. So do not worry! Have faith and live!

Human Part 3

Sometimes love is easy and safe; that love is good. Sometimes love is risky and vulnerable; that love is strong. Sometimes love is reckless and dangerous; that love is holy. Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Love dangerously.

Human Part 4

We cannot crash God’s reign of love… because no matter who we are, and no matter where we are on life’s journey, we are already invited. The decorations are up and the music is on; the buffet is set up and the drinks are chilled; the dance floor is ready and the doors are wide open. Come and celebrate your redemption!

Human Part 5

When God called the world into being, God gave freely. When God looked on a broken world with compassion, God gave freely. When we were in desperate need of a savior, God gave freely. Giving freely might just be the act of love that brings us closest to God.

Human Part 6

Faith in the God who is love leads to true justice. Faith in the God who declares that there is enough and more than enough leads to real justice. Love is justice. Hospitality is justice. Charity is justice. And the most human life is a life full of that justice.

Human Part 7

The God who is love redeems, repairs, and restores all of creation, including our very humanity. We are our most deeply human when we most fully bear the image of the God who is love. And the work of being Christian—of being a disciple of the one who was most fully divine and most fully human—is the work of learning how to be truly human.
